The first ever Students For Liberty inter-school debate/conference was held at the Church of Anglican Faith Based University, Ajayi Crowther University, where University of Ibadan hereby emerged as the winner.
The event was held at Ajayi Crowther University Auditorium on the 11th of November with the theme “the impact of knowledge on the political leadership in Nigeria”.
It is the first ever inter-school debate/conference hosted by the team of Student for Liberty in the university.
The conference kicked off with a presentation by Mr Muyiwa Okediran tagged “It’s no nanny state” , thereafter the first topic presentation came on board ‘’you need more than ideas to change the world’’ which was presented by Wale Adetayo which went along a panelist discussion whose members among Gbenle Iyanuoluwa, Okediran Mayowa and Oiku Peter. After the discussion the judges were called up to the high table to start the 1st round of the competition. Each participating school was represented by two speakers. The participating schools in the competition were; Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomoso, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun state, Leadcity University, Ibadan, Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo.
The 1st round topic tagged: Is it encouraging and easier to advance liberty through education rather than engaging political process? was debated close to an hour on the podium.
After the 1st round of debate, the second presentation tagged “abortion and child –abuse among youth in Nigeria: implications and solutions” was delivered by Mrs. O.A. Adeyemo. She gave insight into what can cause abortion, implications to face when one aborts.
Along the line there was a short music interlude and an award was presented to Mr Mayowa Okediran, the present SFL African Programs coordinator, for his contributions and impact generally and this also gave room for the competing participant to prepare for the 2nd round of the competition where the theme of the event “the impact of knowledge on the political leadership in Nigeria” was to be debated upon.
The third topic presentation was a leadership session for student leaders in various schools to come and share their experience so far as a leader. Each student leader shared their expectation on what they thought the management should do and should put in place for students, and also encourage educational programmes that will elicit greater creativity in students. These led to the last topic presentation on “the impact of media and its menaces in the society” presented by Mr Solomon Ntukepo.
After the presentation, Mr Malachy Udejinta who was the chief judge of the event called on the president of SFL ACU chapter and the staff adviser to present certificate to all participants who came for the programme.
Thereafter the programme got to the point where everyone was eager to hear the announcement of winners. At this point the Auditorium was quiet as to who will take the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Ajayi Crowther University was called for the 3rd place position, Leadcity University for the 2nd place position and University of Ibadan for the 1st place position.
Among the present was the Vice -chancellor of the university, Rt. Rev. Professor Dapo F. Asaju; and Dean of Student Affairs Professor C.O.O Agboola, amongst many other lecturers and personnel present for the event. The opening prayer was said by Ven. Taiwo Olodude who is the Asst. Chaplain of the school. Also the welcome speech was delivered by Mr Odeyemi a lecturer from History and International studies who represented Dr. W. Arinde of the same department.
The Immediate past President Gbenle Iyanuoluwa, and our amiable Local Coordinator Adedayo Adetayo were present, moving up and down ensuring things were in place
